MAYO: Hello, Blazers, I’m Mr. Mayo, supervisor of BNC. On Monday’s episode of Infoflow from home, we displayed several potentially triggering violent clips of incidents in 2020. One of the clips included a graphic depiction of George Floyd’s murder. These clips were shown without proper warning and context. We recognize how this was an insensitive treatment of very emotionally charged and painful footage, and we apologize for the upset or pain this may have caused. We have taken the episode down from social media and youtube. We've discussed the missteps that led to this video being aired, and we've developed plans to ensure it doesn’t happen again in the future.  At BNC we have a responsibility to inform and represent the student body, and we intend to do this in the most thoughtful way possible. We sincerely apologize for airing the George Floyd footage. We aim to be mindful of the impact of such events on our stu dents and staff, and remain committed to educating both ourselves and the community about the history of race, injustice and inequality.

EMMANUEL: And I’m EMMANUEL. In local news, Montgomery County has surpassed 62,523 cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, February 23rd.
NOLAN: Montgomery County schools are set to reopen for in-person learning in less than a week. As the deadline approaches, the negotiations between the teacher’s union and the county have reached a stalemate. Specifically regarding the union’s request for hazard pay, which is “extra compensation for employees who work closely with the public and could be at greater risk for getting COVID-19.” 
EMMANUEL: In presidential news, the Biden administration appointed Julie Ver  ratti, co-founder of Denizens Brewing company, as the “ associate administrator of field operations for the U.S. Small Business Administration.” The decision comes as an attempt to create “equitable solutions for the hard-working women and men who operate the millions of small businesses that are the backbone of our economy and communities.”


NOLAN: A United Airlines jetliner suffered a massive engine failure shortly after departing Denver for Honolulu. While extremely dangerous debris was scattered among the town of Boulder below, no one was injured and the plane returned safely to the airport. The specific engine model involved in the accident was a PW4077, which has raised safety concerns before. As a result, United is grounding all of its planes with the PW4077 pending FAA inspection.
EMMANUEL: In global news, Facebook restores news articles after making a deal with Australian regulators over a proposed law. This law would have forced tech companies like Facebook and Google to pay publishers for news content. Unlike Google who complied, Facebook retaliated by taking down such news content last Thursday, rather than paying up. The Australian government relented to the pressure and agreed to make changes to some of the terms within its new media code.

EMMANUEL: For our last look at great black figures, this Black History Month we turn to Alexa Irene Canady. In 1981, Alexa Irene Canady became the first black woman to be a neurosurgeon in the United States. She was born in Lansing, MI in 1950, and pursued her bachelor’s and medical degree at University of Michigan. 
NOLAN: Canady initially obtained a degree in zoology but after attending a summer program teaching genetics, she fell in love with medicine. Canady also interned at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1975 and later became the Chief of Neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital. Since 2012, she has retired from practicing medicine and now continues to advocate for and encourage black women to pursue careers in STEM.

EMMANUEL: Para nuestro último vistazo a las grandes figuras negras, este Mes de la Historia Negra recurrimos a Alexa Irene Canady. En 1981, Alexa Irene Canady se convirtió en la primera mujer negra en ser neurocirujana en los Estados Unidos.
