DAVID: Good Afternoon, Blazers, and welcome back to Info flow from home! Welcome to February and the second semester! Today is Thursday, February 4th. I’m DAVID
EMMANUEL: And I’m EMMANUEL. In local news, Montgomery County has surpassed 58,965 cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, February 2nd.
DAVID: In more local news, Maryland has given Montgomery county a grant of $11.2M to fund restaurants and hotels.  $4.9 million will be sent to restaurants and the other $6.2M will be used to aid hotels. Smaller restaurants, food trucks and wineries will also be eligible for relief funds as long as they comply with government mandates. The county is also considering using $3.6M from general funds to continue before, during, and after school child-care for low income students.
EMMANUEL: Still reporting locally, Kensington resident Anthony Brennan has pleaded guilty to assaulting 3 young activists who were hanging up Black Lives Matter signs along crescent trail around Bethesda back in June. His conviction holds a maximum of 10 years in prison, and he will be properly sentenced this week.


DAVID:  In national news, the United States is threatening to levy sanctions on the East Asian country of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), after the Burmese army seized control of the civilian government installed in 2015. President Biden labeled the coup a “direct assault on Myanmar’s transition to democracy and rule of law.” This stance will put the U.S. at odds with China and Russia, who have not condemned the takeover.


EMMANUEL: And in groundhog news, Punxsutawney Phil, the official groundhog of Groundhog’s Day, saw his shadow predicting six more weeks of winter. But never fear, “After winter, you’re looking forward to one of the most beautiful and brightest springs you’ve ever seen.”

DAVID: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People- the NAACP- marked its 110th anniversary in 2019.   
Spurred by growing racial violence in the early 20th century, and specifically the 1908 race riots in Springfield, Illinois, a group of African American leaders joined together to form the NAACP as a permanent civil rights organization.
