| SILVAN: And I’m SILVAN. For today’s Hispanic Heritage fact, Jovita Idár was a Mexican-American journalist, activist, and suffragist in the early 1900s. She ran her own newspaper, where she advocated for the rights of Mexican-Americans, and she also became the first president of a feminist organization that provided education for Mexican-American students. She also worked as a nurse in the Mexican Revolution and openly criticized the American army’s involvement. |
| ADEN: MCPS is partnering with county police and the Maryland’s Attorney Office to hold gun education assemblies about the dangers and consequences of gun violence in high schools. This news was announced a day before Bethesda Chevy Chase went on lockdown due to false reports of a gun on campus. |
| SILVAN: Firefighters in northern California have recently reported having made major progress on the week-long wildfire that has become California’s largest so far this year. Over the past few years California has been getting warmer and dryer, causing the weather to become more extreme and wildfires more frequent. 2022 marks the fifth year that California has experienced the largest and most destructive fires in its history. |
