InfoFlow Episode 8.023 – 10/7/22

[Infoflow intro] + [pledge of allegiance]
HABIB: Welcome back to Infoflow, Blazers. Today is Friday, October 7th. I’m HABIB.
NOLAN: And I’m NOLAN. For today’s Hispanic Heritage fact, Luis von Ahn is a Guatemalan entrepreneur and computer science professor. He is the founder of reCAPTCHA and did early pioneering work on developing CAPTCHA tests that help protect websites from automated programs and robots. He also co-founded Duolingo, the world’s most popular learning-language platform.
HABIB: On Saturday, two bystanders in Silver Spring were able to disarm an active shooter. Witnesses reported that one of the bystanders jumped and kicked the shooter, grabbing his shoulders and disarming him, while the other one jumped on his back and pinned him down. The bystanders kept the gunman restrained until authorities arrived, leaving no one injured.
NOLAN: On Monday, the U.S. Interior Department established several new policies aimed at increasing transparency between the public and the police. One of these policies would require thousands of law enforcement officers to wear body cameras, and another that would force the release of camera footage if necessary. The U.S. Interior Department launched these policies after facing scrutiny about both the fatal shooting of unarmed Bijan Ghaisar back in 2017, and the usage of smoke grenades and pepper balls to disperse racial justice protesters in front of the White House in 2020.
HABIB: Now, let’s go to Mary, Evelyn, and Anina to hear about this year’s yearbook.
