InfoFlow Episode 7.123 – 3/29/22

[Infoflow intro] + [pledge of allegiance]
DECLAN: Welcome back to Infoflow, Blazers. Today is Tuesday, March 29th. I’m Declan
NAHOM: And I’m Nahom. Today’s Women’s history month fact is about Claudia Jones. Born in Trinidad in 1915, Jones emigrated to the US and settled down in Harlem, New York at only 9 years old. Although Jones did not complete high school, she led a very successful life in politics and journalism. Claudia Jones was very active in the Communist party and wrote for many political newspapers advocating for racial justice and women’s rights.
DECLAN: A 1,095 foot container ship ran aground in the Chesapeake Bay over two weeks ago and hopefully will be freed sometime this week. Thankfully the Ever Forward cargo ship (that’s a pretty ironic name if you ask me) has not been blocking traffic, but environmentalists are concerned about the growing risk of a fuel leak. Today marks the one year anniversary of the Ever Given cargo ship sister to the Ever Forward, being released from the Suez Canal.
NAHOM: Now, let’s take a look at some of our 2022 spring varsity sports
Spring Sports Promo
NAHOM: Thanks, Morgan. Make sure to support all of our athletes this season!
DECLAN: If you’re an experienced climber or just getting started, stop by portable 3 at 11:30 tomorrow for the Blair Climbing Club intro meeting! This club will allow rock climbers to meet and discuss news and events.
NAHOM: Girl up is hosting a talent show! It will be held at lunch tomorrow, March 30 in the auditorium and the fee to attend is $3. All the proceeds will go to Ruth’s House, a women’s shelter that provides safe housing for women and children in DC. Come out and see their amazing performers for a good cause!
DECLAN: And now let’s hear from a couple Silver Chips writers about a story in the newest publication.
CHRISTY: Hey, I’m ChristyANNIE: And I’m Annie. We are staff writers on Silver Chips Print. CHRISTY: For our March cycle, we wrote an opinion on equity in artificial intelligence. Specifically, we focus on facial recognition technology, which uses a form of artificial intelligence called deep learning. These deep learning algorithms are trained to identify and verify faces, which are technologies widely implemented in places such as law enforcement offices and airport security. ANNIE: However, it has been shown time and time again that these technologies are not equitable for all groups of people, achieving much lower accuracy for faces of women and people of color. Our story explores how this gap in recognition rates across demographic groups for facial recognition systems can have severe real-world consequences, and why government institutions should not use them until they can serve all citizens equally. CHRISTY: Make sure to grab a copy of Silver Chips Print and check out B3 to read about the implications of bias and inequity in facial recognition technology.
DECLAN: THanks Christy and Annie! You can pick up your copy outside the Media Center or in your English class.
NAHOM: The Blair Society for Minorities in STEM or BSMS is a club that aims to uplift the voices of students from diverse backgrounds and inspire them in the field of STEM. They meet on Wednesdays during lunch in room 323 at 11:30. At this Wednesday’s meeting they’ll be making slime. They hope to see you there!
DECLAN: And now let’s hear from Gwen about this week’s weather
