GWEN: And I’m GWEN. Today’s Black History Month fact is about the Bill Pickett Invitational rodeo, the only touring African American Rodeo in the world. Founded in 1984 to honor and celebrate the Black cowgirls and cowboys that built the west. Named after Bill Pickett the first Black cowboy movie star and the inventor of the rodeo event now known as steer rearing 
BELLA: The Montgomery County Council unanimously passed a bill that would require the county to clear snow from 40 miles of sidewalks in low income communities near transit where there is no adjacent private or commercial property owner. The county already clears over 60 miles in urban areas. 
GWEN:In sports news, Ryan Zimmerman officially announced his retirement on Tuesday. Zimmerman was the first draft pick of the Washington Nationals in 2005 – the first year of the franchise’s history.

SAMSON: This week in Black history is brought to you by the Black student UnionKARIS: Bessie Smith makes her first recording, “Down Hearted Blues,” in 1922 selling 800,000 copies. She almost went platinum.SAMSON: The first black professional basketball team, “The Renaissance,” was organized on February 13th 1923. Hard to imagine a time when there was once only ONE black professional teamKARIS: Morehouse College organized in Augusta, Ga. on February 14th 1867. The institution was later moved to Atlanta.SAMSON: Mid week in 1968, Henry Lewis became the first black conductor to lead a symphony orchestra in the United States.KARIS: All the way back in 1688, the FIRST EVER formal protest by Quakers against slavery went on in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Almost 200 years before the civil war.SAMSON: In that spirit of revolution and freedom 2Pac released his fourth album All Eyez On Me back in 1996KARIS:  Feb 17th was an amazing day. Check out these birthdaysSAMSON: In 1902, opera singer Marian Anderson was born. She is known for performing at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939, after being denied to perform for an integrated audience.KARIS: In 1936, NFL running back Jim Brown was born. After football he was a social activist  and founded the Black Economic Union, which promoted professional athletes to fund Black-run businesses.SAMSON: In 1942, Black Panther Party’s founder, Huey P. Newton was born.  He worked to ensure that African-Americans  were not abused, advised them of their rights, and posted bail for those wrongfully arrested.KARIS: And lastly in 1963  Michael Jeffrey Jordan, was born.  After AIR Jordan ended his career he has donated money to the NAACP, the Formerly Incarcerated and Convicted People and Families Movement (FICPFM), and Black Voters Matter organizationsSAMSON: The Black Student Union would like to invite all students to our Black Student union meetings regardless of race to discuss matters of importance to Black students and Blair studentsKARIS: We meet on Tuesdays in room 144 from 2:45- 4:00 drinks and snacks will be provided. SIENA: Hey, Blazers! This weekend, we are starting off with some showers as temperatures rise. Today, there is a chance of showers in the morning, with a high of 53 and a low of 27. Saturday will be sunny and clear, with a high of 48 and a low of 23. Finally on Sunday, it will be sunny again, with a high of 47 and a low around 35. That’s it for the weekend, but tune in next tuesday to hear about the weather for the upcoming week.
