LEVI: And I’m LEVI. In local news, Montgomery County has surpassed 60,633 cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, February 9th.
SKYE: Over this past weekend, Richard Montgomery student Simeon Mukuna passed away from a gunshot wound. Foul play is being ruled in the investigation and there is a suspect in custody. Simeon was on his way to graduate and move onto college, he played soccer and wanted to pursue a career in the arts. As always, your counselors are available, please don't hesitate to reach out.
LEVI: In National news, the impeachment trial of former President Donald J. Trump is underway. On Tuesday February 9th, senators decided by a vote of 56-44 that they had the power to try former president Trump, continuing the impeachment process. While this vote indicates that 6 senate Republicans are open to impeachment, Democrats would have to obtain 11 more Republican votes to actually convict President Trump.

LEVI: As pressure from parents of special education students mounts, Montgomery County is holding meetings to expedite the return to in person learning. All in an effort to close the growing gap between special needs students and their peers. As of Tuesday the 9th, the tentative return date to in person learning is March 15th. Be on the lookout for more information.
SKYE: Sponsored by Delegate Alonzo Washington, a bill in the Maryland state legislature would grant school students excused absences for mental health reasons. Under the proposed law, students would be allowed to skip school once every quarter — without needing a doctor’s note. The legislation aims to alleviate mental health problems exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. 
LEVI: The formerly ‘Aunt Jemima” line of pancake mix and syrup has now been renamed as “Pearl Milling Company.” Back in June, PepsiCo. Inc., owner of the brand announced they would be renaming the line as it was a reference to a racist caricature from minstrel shows. They were among the first of a handful of brands to announce efforts for renaming last summer along with Uncle Ben’s and Mrs. Butterworth’s.
SKYE: For today’s Black History Month fact- Thurgood Marshall  was the first African American Supreme Court Justice. He served on the court from 1967 to 1991. Marshall was an important figure in promoting racial equality during the civil rights movement. During his 24 years of service, he argued a record-breaking 32 cases before the Supreme Court, and won 29 of them.
