2 | NAHOM: Welcome back to InfoFlow, Blazers! I’m Nahom. |
2 | THEO: And I’m Theo. MCPS Students have organized a county wide walkout this Friday at 12 pm. Their demands are that the county go virtual for two weeks, give students hybrid options, give more support to students quarantining, more diversified and frequent covid testing, and better communication and transparency from the county. |
2 | NAHOM: In a letter to the current Montgomery County Board of Education, two Members of the School Board urge that interim superintendent, Monifa McKnight, should be appointed to lead the state’s largest school system for the next four years “effective immediately.” McKnight has been under extreme scrutiny and criticism and on January 9th, she issued a public apology to the school community, apologizing for any stress this caused our staff, students, and community members. |
2 | THEO: Last Sunday, the 16th, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen died in his Bethesda home. Charles McGee broke barriers as a member of a group of African American pilots who served in World War II. After his retirement he was presented with the Congressional gold medal and became a part of the National Aviation Hall of Fame. McGee lived to 102 years old. |
2 | NAHOM: In New York, a center for covid transmission, omicron variant cases have been declining. This could foreshadow similar declines elsewhere in the country. This does not mean covid precautions would be relaxed, but that fewer hospitalizations will occur. The Governor of New York reminded everyone on Saturday “Please keep getting vaccinated, getting the booster dose, getting … children vaccinated, and wearing non-cloth masks. Let’s not undo all the hard work we’ve put in to bring the numbers down.” |
