Show Intro
TRUNK: Hey there, Blazers! Today is Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016.
SHESH: We’ve got another SHESH-tacular show for you today, but first, please stand for the pledge.
Pledge of Allegiance
TRUNK: Welcome to Infoflow. I’m Trunk,
SHESH: And I’m Shesh. Today’s weather will be partly cloudy with a 60% chance of afternoon showers. Don’t forget your umbrellas, Blazers!
TRUNK: In the news, President Mugabe of Zimbabwe issued new regulations yesterday allowing government bond notes to be officially traded as currency. He hopes that this regulation will help ease the shortage of US dollars in the country following the hyper-inflation and subsequent demonetization of Zimbabwean Dollars over the past decade. Currently the country uses South African rand, Pounds Sterling, US Dollars, Euros, Botswanan Pula, Indian Rupees and others in a multi-currency basket.
SHESH: Want to be featured in Silver Chips? Submit a personal column of about 500 words to silverchipsprint@gmail.com for a chance to have your work published in their November issue! You don’t have to write anything new to submit; feel free to use any of your assignments from English class that showcase something unique about yourself!
TRUNK: Do you want to redesign a website to gain experience and earn SSL hours at the same time? The Indian Spring Citizens Association and Safe Silver Spring are looking for a student who is able to work on their website a few hours a week. If you are interested in this opportunity, please see Mrs. Hiscock in room 130 for contact information.
SHESH: If you’re just an SSL fiend, you can earn more hours by distributing food to those who need assistance! A new program called Arleeta’s Choice Pantry will be starting at Four Corners Mission and Outreach Center, located directly across from Blair High School at 33 University Blvd E. The program takes place Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. A mandatory orientation meeting for students will be held November 10 from 2:45 pm – 3:45 pm at the Four Corners Mission and Outreach Center. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Hiscock in room 130 for more information.
TRUNK: Discovery is looking for two people in the class of 2017 who identify as girls to assist with their Say Yes to the Prom event preparations! All preparations take place at the Discovery building in downtown Silver Spring. If you are interested, please see Mrs. Hiscock in room 130. The two spots open are first come, first serve, so don’t delay!
SHESH: Hey Blazers, want to help save a life? Give blood at Blair’s November 21st blood drive! You must be at least 16 years old to participate. Sign up at Blair Boulevard starting today until the 18th.
TRUNK: There will be a baseball information meeting today in room 117 after ninth period. All those interested in trying out for baseball should attend. If you know anyone who is interested in trying out, please let them know.
SHESH: Linguists have studied bilinguals for a long time: people who speak English and Spanish or French and Arabic. But what about people who use not two spoken languages, but two sign languages? Dr. Deborah Chen Pickler from Gallaudet University says these individuals are the next big thing in linguistic research. See her explain why at Linguistics Club at 3:20-4:30 this Wednesday, November 2, in room 346. All are welcome!
TRUNK: Want to rake in those SSL hours? Volunteer at Sports Plus, a non-profit organization that offers co-ed sports and social programs for kids 5 to 14 who have mild to moderate autistic spectrum disorders. Sports Plus volunteers assist coaches with activities, help with set-up and clean-up, and most of all, provide encouragement to their young athletes. Expertise in a particular sport is NOT required, but enthusiasm is! More details about Sports Plus are available on www.playsportsplus.org. Interested? Contact Diane Golden at golden4@comcast.net or see Mrs. Hiscock in room 130.
SHESH: Scared, worried, and/or concerned about this year’s election? So are we! Take a look at this video to learn more about the issues and policies you’ll be voting on!
(Voter guide pack)
TRUNK: Make sure to get out and vote next Tuesday, November 8th! Your voice matters!
SHESH: And now, let’s hear a message from Principal Johnson about the Youth Advisory Board!
(Youth advisory pack)
TRUNK: I would ADVISE you not to miss out on this opportunity!
SHESH: Don’t forget to tag your creative content with the hashtag blairsilverstream, and check out our website to submit announcements and see all of our previous videos.
TRUNK: And that’s all we have for today, Blazers! Have a wonderful Wednesday, and stay tuned for silverstream!
